2010 Annual Report
In 2010….
Computers in high demand. New HP computers were purchased in January. The computers have Office 2007 software and a network printer. A strong interest in Internet access, downloading, printing, job searches, filing employment applications and browsing for reference and general interest has increased greatly. We also began to offer an instruction class in setting up email, using basic Word, and resume writing that has proved very popular and helpful.
Children’s programs remain very popular. Our new Moms and Babies Storytime has been very well received in its first year. Infants to 23 months of age are stimulated by the co lors and the spoken word as they are introduced to the joy of reading. In 2010, we offered 176 individual Children’s Programs for older kids and 4,938 were in attendance. Our Summer Reading Program helps keep K-6 kids’ reading skills sharp over the school vacation so they are ready for their new grade level.
Adult programs. We offered a host of adult programming that gave nearly 3,000 people a taste of new and exciting crafts, foods, ideas and hobbies. Our selections covered such subjects as dog sledding, orienteering, the music of Duke Ellington, decoupage, lighthouses in North America, summer grilling, Star Wars characters from the 501st Legion’s Garrison Excelsior and the Rebel Legion Echobase, pairing cheese with which food and wine, and…well you get the idea. Do you have any ideas for a 1-2 hour program or presentation? Get in touch with Rosanne Rosella at the library--she’s the program planner.
Audio Visual. Our audio/visual collection is one of our most popular. We provide many books on CD, and a great collection of DVDs. Do you have a VCR or a tape d eck? We still have many fine books on audio cassette as well as movies on VHS. We are not buying new ones, as many are not offered in this format anymore, but we’re not getting rid of ours just because they’re old either. Don’t forget us when you’re looking for entertainment. Long trip or commute? Listen to a book on CD—we also have some on MP3 and all are guaranteed to make the drive more pleasant.
Local History. The Local History area now has a browse-able New York State Cemetery Index Collection. Kenneth L. Veneron had made a donation of these grave stone surveys to the Henrietta Public Library and they are available to the public. Cemeteries Indexes are grouped by town or county name.
Teen Corner. Our teens have a very special place at HPL. We have the books for reading, the CDs for listening, and the DVDs they want to watch. There is an active Teen Advisory Board that recommends new titles and authors to the Teen Librarian and they’re always on the lookout for new members. The Teen Books and Bites program meets off-site at Great Northern Pizza Kitchen where pizza, book discussions, and ideas are king. The annual Teen Book Festival is a highlight of the year where the teens get to meet some of their favorite authors. Our teens are also budding authors – special programs are offered in creative writing.
Book Shoppe. The Friends of Henrietta Public Library completed their Book Shoppe restoration in early 2010. They now have an open, beautifully appointed real book store appearance. Friends worked hard, raised the funding, and completely paid for the update from private money. No public dollars were spent in making this room as functional and operational as possible. What a great addition it’s been to the library. Used books (some are still bestsellers) are offered for a fraction of their original cost. Paperbacks and magazines are found at bargain prices. The Book Shoppe has regular hours during the week. The FHPL also host 2 giant booksales every year that are usually the first weekend in May and the Columbus Day weekend in October.
2010 Community Party - "Broadway" The Pop Show Band played and sang to Broadway favorites along with staff and patrons of HPL. The library was themed with Broadway posters and pictures and staff were all costumed as some of their favorite Broadway characters. There were games, face painting, contests, prizes for

kids and fantastic treats for all. Read’s Ice Cream provided the ice cream sundaes and Barbeque and Pizza Too donated 17 pizzas! We had over 400 people in attendance for this annual event that was sponsored and completely paid for by the Friends of Henrietta Public Library.
New Scooter
We are very pleased to provide a scooter for our patrons. This was generously donated by staff member Rosanne Rosella’s family.
