Poggio Bracciolini was the greatest book hunter of the Renaissance and in 1417 he found a book lost to history for more than a thousand years. It was a scandalous poem written by Lucretius titled On the Nature of Things. Lucretius believed that the universe functioned without the gods, matter was made up of tiny particles, pleasure and virtue were intertwined and that religious fear was damaging to human life.
