Vote for Books!
With a big election coming up next month, now is a good time to read about elections, campaigning, and voting. There have been a number of children’s books published recently on the topic, most of which take a humorous look at politics. Here are a few of them:
Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio
When Grace sees a poster of all the American presidents, she asks “where are the girls?” As she runs for president of her elementary school, she learns about the Electoral College – and how much work it is to run for office! For grades 1 – 4
President Pennybaker by Kate Feiffer
A boy named Luke decides to run for president, with a platform that includes painting the White House orange! The terrific illustrations are by Diane Goode. For ages 4 – 8
Vote 4 Amelia by Marissa Moss
Amelia and her friend Carly are enjoying running for office, until the campaign turns nasty. Written in the form of a notebook, this is filled with cartoons and notes. For grades 4 – 6
Madam President by Lane Smith
An extremely funny look at the duties of the President- in this case a little girl whose pet cat is a Secret Service agent! For ages 4 – 8
LaRue for Mayor by Mark Teague
The subtitle is Letters from the Campaign Trail. This latest book about the clever dog Ike finds him running against the “Law and Order” candidate. For grades K – 4
Otto Runs for President by Rosemary Wells
Both entertaining and educational, this is the story of a student body of puppies and their election process. For ages 4 – 8
Happy Reading!
