Children’s Magazines

The Henrietta Public Library offers a wonderful array of magazines for all ages. Magazines for children can be especially appealing because they offer a variety of formats, subjects, games, bright illustrations, and curriculum enriching articles. Because magazines contain relatively short articles and colorful pages they can hold the attention of reluctant readers better than an average book. Here are a few titles in our collection which are particularly noteworthly:

CobblestoneCobblestone is a history magazine which devotes each issue to one event in American history. The October 2006 issue covers the events surrounding the Battle at Yorktown which ended the Revolutionary War. For children, ages 9-14 years, this magazine overflows interesting articles, trivia sidebars, colorful activities and recommended websites and books.

LadybugLadybug and Babybug are similar literary magazines for the youngest new readers. Intended for 2-6 year olds, and babies and toddlers, respectively, these short magazines offer original stories and colorful illustrations. Babybug is especially nice as it is made of sturdy cardboard and its small square shape is perfect for toddlers’ tiny hands.

Muse is primarily a science magazine published in part by the Smithsonian Magazine for children 8-14 years old. Articles in the September issue include: “Surviving a Robot Revolt”, “The Secrets of Vesuvius” and “A Warning from the Golden Toad”. Illustrated with wonderful color photos, this magazine also includes “Muse Mail” (letters to the editor from kids) and neat trivia and questions and answer sections.

MuseGirls’Life or GL is a periodical designed for the tween-age girls in your house. This publication is filled with the newest trends in fashion, friends, entertainment – the October/November issue includes an article on Alex Pettyfer, the teen star of the new movie, Stormbreaker

Sports Illustrated for Kids is a monthly magazine for young sports fans ages 9-14. Like its weekly big brother, Sports Illustrated for Kids has feature articles on major sports stars, i.e.: Lebron James, Eli Manning and big events like the World Series and previews of the new NBA season. Filled with great color photographs and little advertising, this is a must for your Lebron James want-to-be.
