Unique Collections at HPL

Libraries aren't just books! We have 3 collections of unique items at the Henrietta Public Library. Clicked on the linked text below or scroll down this webpage to learn more about each collection:

Items from these unique collections can be checked out by library patrons of all ages! Please note: These library items may have different policies and fines than typical library materials (books, DVDs, etc.).

DIY Collection

The Discover It Yourself (DIY) collection is a bunch of unique items that you can check out with your library card and take home to use. Items may be as small as a card game or as large as a telescope. It's your chance to try out a unique, large, or even pricey item before you decide to buy it yourself! This collection is for all ages!

The DIY collection is located in Henrietta Public Library's Children's Room. The items can be checked out for 3 weeks and can only be returned to the Henrietta Public Library.

Here are some items we have in our DIY Collection:​

  • Birdwatching kit

  • Blowup t-rex costume

  • Cake decorating kit

  • Cake pans (of various unique shapes/characters)

  • Fidget toys

  • Games (various board games and card games)

  • Ghost hunting kit

  • GoPro camera

  • Homido VR headsets

  • Lemonade stand

  • Maple sugaring kit

  • Microscope

  • Nintendo Switch

  • Pasta machine

  • Puzzles (from 6 pieces to 1,000 pieces!)

  • Rock classification kit

  • Snowshoes

  • Telescope

  • Ukulele

  • Weather kit

  • 3-D printing pen

  • ...And so much more! There are over 150 items in our DIY collection. You'll have to come into the library and see what we currently have available.

DIY Kit Lending Agreement

Checking out DIY kits

  • DIY kits may be checked out by any library card holder in good standing.

  • The kit circulates for three weeks and cannot be renewed.

 

Returning DIY kits

  • There is a Content List with every DIY kit. Please make sure all parts are present and that all materials are clean when you bring it back to the library.

  • Do not put kits in the book drop. The kit must be returned to a staff member inside HPL.

  • When you return the DIY kit, it will remain on your account until staff can do a thorough inventory of its contents, which can take some time. When everything has been checked, we will backdate and remove it from your account.

 

If you lose or damage something

  • If the kit is lost or is never returned, you will be billed the replacement cost.

  • If a part of the kit is missing, our staff will notify you. If you cannot find the item/s, the library may charge a fee to replace the items.

  • If something is damaged, our staff will notify you. The library may charge a fee to replace part or all of the kit.

Tabletop Role-Playing Games

The Tabletop Role-Playing Games (RPG) Collection is perfect those who want to try out a tabletop RPG before they invest in the book and/or other materials. The collection is comprised of mainly books, with instructions for how to play the game. RPG books can be checked out for 3 weeks, with a maximum of 2 renewals or 9 weeks.

The collection can be found in the Teen Corner and in the Children's Room-- but the collection can be enjoyed by people of all ages!

Checked out an RPG book but forgot to grab some character sheets? No worries! Just print them out here:

Publishers of the above RPG books have given Henrietta Public Library permission to distribute them digitally.

VIP Passes

Very Important Places (VIP) passes provide library users with discount to enjoy the best of Monroe County’s arts and cultural treasures. Bring a VIP pass to the location and enjoy discounted admission or ticket purchases.

You only have one week to use a VIP pass, so be sure to plan your visit!

At the Henrietta Public Library, we have these VIP passes*:

Empire Passes for State Parks

Here’s how it works:

  • Visit your participating local library and check out an Empire Pass – just like a book!

  • Take the pass to a participating park and enjoy FREE admission!

  • After you have enjoyed a great day, return the pass to the library.

Where to visit

The pass is usable at many New York State park facilities, such as Cayuga Lake, Letchworth, Stony Brook, Watkins Glen, and Pine Grove Boat Launch. For a full list of locations around New York State visit click here!

Using the Empire Pass

The Empire Pass permits unlimited vehicle access to most facilities operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Empire pass in useable for all motor vehicles except those used in the business of transporting passengers for hire including public or private buses, shuttles, taxis, limousines or other livery vehicles. The Empire Pass will not be accepted if it has been altered in any way. The Empire Pass must be presented upon entry to the facility. Without the pass, you will be required to pay the vehicle entry fee. Lost or stolen passes will be reported to the New York State Parks and will be charged a replacement fee.
